Varietal splendour showing shades of violet, aromas of wild strawberries, plums, vanilla off-set by a lovely hint of herbs
Terrazas Malbec, Argentina £ 3.50 £ 4.50 £ 13.00
Deep dark brooding. Great fruit in the black currant, damson and plum area tempered to a dry finish by hints of pepper. Medium to full bodied.
Marques de Murrieta Ygay, Reserva, Rioja, Spain £ 19.75
Splendid example of the Tempranillo grape at its finest. Dark forest fruits with hints of cassis, liquorice and the merest whiff of fine old tobacco . A couple of years in oak barrels before bottling gives it a good balanced structure. Well suited to most meaty dishes and goes down a treat with medium to strong mature cheeses.
Woodthorpe Te Mata, Pinot Noir, New Zealand £ 5.50 £ 16.00
This is a great example of what can happen when a classic French grape goes travelling. New Zealand's Hawkes Bay has shown itself to be near perfectly suited for Pinot Noir. Lovely smooth fruit, hints of silage (good!) and long lingering dry'ish finish. Take your time over this one. Medium bodied.
Hollick Wilgha Shiraz, Australia £ 25.00
From the Coonawarra region comes this rich, powerful yet smooth Shiraz. This is a wine with fantastic fruit in the dark cherries and black currant end of the spectrum, tempered with pepper and spice. Tannins support the elegant structure making this a near perfect premium Aussie shiraz.
Mamre Brook Shiraz , Australia £ 16.50
Barossa Valley Shiraz with a capital B. Deep flavours of plums, black Currants and liquorice all elegantly structured by good use of oak ageing. I love it! Caroline.
Chateau La Croix de Grezard , Lussac-St.Emilion,France £ 18.50
Claret at its most elegant and delicious. This great Bordeaux deserved good food,- indeed it is a food Wine by its very nature. Enjoy with steak, duck, venison and cheeses which are just about to escape from the cheese board. Medium bodied.
Podere il Chiostrino, Chianti Italy £ 5.50 £ 15.00
Using predominantly Sangiovese grapes from their own vineyards, Virio and Ivo (relatives of Caroline!) have produced a truly great Chianti. Plenty of dark fruits on the palate held up firmly by smooth tannins. Hints of black cherry, cedar and choice tobacco.
“Les Galets Roulees” Chateauneuf du Pape , France £ 22.50
Gorgeousness in a glass. Big juicy flavours tempered with the spiciness typical of really good Rhone Valley reds. This one cries out for game, beef and hearty stews of any kind.
Gevrey Chambertin, Domaine Dujac Fils et Pere £ 32.00
Superbly elegant Burgundy Pinot Noir in the very finest Tradition. Hints of strawberries and forest fruits, the merest whiff of the farmyard and a long dry finish makes this the perfect partner of meat dishes, game and pork.
